Abstract

1312835 Pipe coupling C K WALTHER [trading as CARL KURT WALTHER] 5 Nov 1970 [6 May 1970] 52692/70 Heading F2G In a pipe or hose coupling a locking sleeve 3, urged by a spring 6, depresses locking elements 4 occupying cavities in a female member 2 into a groove 5 in a male member 1 to lock the coupling members together, the sleeve 3 being engagingly controlled by a slidable control sleeve 9. In the embodiment shown, the locking elements are ball-catches resting in conical radial bores 5 in the female member. The control sleeve 9 may be pushed by hand or by means of a tool, the thrust being transmitted to the male portion by a circlip 8 to urge the ball catches 4 from their seats by contact with a forward nose portion of the male member 1. The locking sleeve 3, engaged by the control sleeve at shoulders 13, 20, is advanced until a collar 25 bears on the ball-catches 4, compressing the spring 6, until they snap into the groove on the male member. A gasket 12 seals the connection. Mis-connection between several such couplings, the female parts of which may be mounted on a wall 16, are prevented by a connector matching arrangement which comprises a number of pins 17 inserted in bores (11), (21), (Fig. 2, not shown) on a ring 18 mounted on the control sleeve. The pins 17 engage corresponding bores in a similar ring 18 mounted on the sleeve 15. Holes in the socket ring 18 which are opposite vacant pin positions are blanked off. In another embodiment, the pins and rings 17, 18 are replaced by an annular extension (26), (Fig. 3, not shown) of the sleeve 9 which engages a groove (27) in a sleeve on the female member. A window may be provided in the control sleeve 9 to check the position of the locking sleeve 3. Both parts of the coupling may include a selfsealing valve which opens when the connection 'is made.
