1312571 Benzoxazole derivatives CIBAGEIGY AG 25 June 1971 [25 June 1970] 29948/71 Heading C2C [Also in Division D1] Novel benzoxazole derivatives having the general formula wherein each of R 1 and R 2 is hydrogen, (C 1 -C 5 ) alkyl or chlorine; R 3 is hydrogen or a (C 1 -C 12 ) alkyl, cyclohexyl, halogen, phenyl, (C 1 -C 4 ) alkylsulphonyl, phenylalkyl, (C 1 -C 4 ) alkoxy, carboxyl, carboxylic ester, sulphonic or sulphonic acid amide radical, with R 1 , R 2 and R 3 occupying the 5, 6 or 7 positions; and Z 1 is hydrogen, halogen, alkoxy, phenyl or (C 1 -C 8 ) alkyl, are prepared by either (a) condensing one mole of an acid chloride of the formula with at least two moles of a nitrile of the formula in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst at a temperature of from 70‹ to 160‹ C and, after cooling and dilution, passing in ammonia so as to cyclize the triazine ring, or (b) condensing, in approximately equimolar amounts, an acid derivative of the formula wherein X is halogen, hydroxyl or an alkoxy group, at a temperature of from 120‹ to 350‹ C., optionally in the presence of a condensation agent which eliminates water, with an aminophenol of the formula The novel compounds may be used as optical brighteners for polymeric materials.
