Abstract
1312478 Electric analogue calculating ULTRA ELECTRONICS Ltd 12 May 1971 [26 May 1970] 25275/70 Heading G4G An apparatus for generating a function, such as an antilogarithmic function, comprises a white noise generator 10 for deriving a stationary random time series of events, scanning means 15 responsive to an input applied through circuits 19, 20 to control the duration of repeated scans of the series, detecting means for determining when a specified event occurs in a scan and output means such as a stepping motor 17 and counter 18 responsive to such events. The specified event in Fig. 2 is when the instantaneous output of the noise generator exceeds the mean level as derived from circuit 12, the instantaneous and mean levels being compared in an amplifier 13. The process is repeated by the action of a clock circuit 16. In Fig. 1 (not shown) the specified event in the random series is when the white noise is at zero level and is positivegoing, this causing a bistable circuit (4) to be reset.
