Abstract
1311676 Spot-type disc brakes GIRLING Ltd 13 Aug 1970 [19 Aug 1969] 41307/69 Heading F2E In a disc brake having a clamping member 13 mounted with clearance for sliding movement relative to a body member 10, one of the members has a wedge-piece 30 movable therein to maintain a sliding surface 32 on the wedge-piece in contact with a corresponding sliding surface 27 on the other of the members to take up play at the clearance. As shown, a fixed body member 10 with mounting ears 18, a through bore 20 and lugs 11, 12, is also provided with longitudinal grooves 16, 17, to accommodate a plate-like slidable yoke 13 which straddles the disc (not shown). The yoke is prevented from rattling in the grooves by springs 21. To avoid the need for close manufacturing tolerances and yet avoid the noise generated, on reversal of the direction of rotation, 29, of the disc, by movement of yoke 13 to the right in consequence of drag forces, a wedge-piece 30 is inserted in a bore 31 in lug 12. The wedge-piece has a wedge surface 32 co-operating with the surface 27 of the inside edge 15 of yoke 13, thereby maintaining the clearance gap 28, Fig. 2, at the left hand side of the body member, and keeping the yoke surface 26 and groove surface 24 in contact at the right-hand side, in whichever direction the disc rotates. The wedge-piece 30 is resiliently urged downwards by a spring 33 retained by grub screw 34. As shown, the angle of inclination of wedge surface 32 and of the axis of bore 31 (preferably the same) are so chosen that contact pressure at surfaces 27, 32, does not lead to movement of the wedge-piece. Spring 33 is made weak enough to avoid inhibiting normal sliding movement of the yoke. The angles above referred to could alternatively be so chosen that contact pressure due to drag forces would move the wedge-piece to "cushion" the relative movement at the sliding surfaces. Preferably the body member accommodates an hydraulic actuator in the form of two opposed pistons slidable in the through bore 20, one of these acting directly on a brake pad located between the lugs 11, 12, and the other acting on one end of the yoke, whose opposite end bears against a pad located at the opposite side of the disc (e.g. as described in Specification 1,075,371). Alternatively, the body member may be pivoted about an axis close to but perpendicular to the disc axis, and may incorporate a blind bore slidably receiving a piston acting on the yoke; the body member itself acts on the directlyoperated pad.
