Abstract
1311615 Training in warfare MARCONI CO Ltd 26 Nov 1971 [26 March 1971] 8031/71 Heading F3C [Also in Division G5] A system for training personnel under condi- tions of simulated radio-activity comprises a base station 1 and two slave stations A, B which are geographically disposed at the apices of a triangle within which lies territory assumed to have been involved either in a nuclear attack or in an accident with nuclear material; a plurality of field instruments 2 to be carried by the per sonnel under training; a unit 4 and receivers 7, 8, 9 at the base station which, on receipt of signals from the instruments 2 and the stations A, B, co-operate to locate the position of each instrument; and apparatus including a computer 3 and the units 4, 5, 6 at the base station for transmitting to each instrument 2 a data signal representing assumed radiation level at the location of that instrument so that, for each participant in the training exercise, the field instrument behaves as if it were normally operational. The field instruments are of known type in which the normal radiation measuring or monitoring circuits are replaced by electric circuits capable of distinguishing a signal addressed to a particular instrument by the base station and utilizing data supplied thereby to provide a response to the participant similar to the response which would be given by that instrument in a real radio-active situation; a suitably modified instrument is described with reference to Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown).
