Abstract
1311520 Alkene addition products DEFENCE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 13 Sept 1971 [16 June 1970] 29019/70 Heading C5E An alkene (i.e. an olefin, diolefin or substitution product thereof) is reacted with an electron donor (e.g. an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal) in the presence of one or more monofunctional compounds having monofunctional groups susceptible to nucleophilic attack in at least an equimolar amount compared with the alkene to produce a non-polymeric small molecule consisting of two ligands of the monofunctional compounds added across a double bond of the alkene. The monofunctional groups may be halide, epoxy, non- enolizable keto, aldehyde, nitrile, acylchloride, or isocyanate. The electron donor may be dispersed ina cation-solvating aprotic solvent optionally mixed with a ion-cation solvating diluent. An electron transfer agent such as naphthalene, anthracene or biphenyl may also be present. Examples describe the following reactions: (1) α-methylstyrene, Li pellets and a BuBr in THF to give 5-phenyldecane. (2) α-methylstyrene, Li and MeBr in THF to give 2 methyl-2 phenylbutane. (3) Butadiene, Li pellets and n.PrBr in THF to give (4) (5) Styrene, Li pellets and n.PrBr in THF to give 4-phenyloctane. (6) as (4) and (5) using Na instead of Li. The molar ratio of monofunctional compound to alkene is preferably at least 2 : 1.
