Abstract
1310883 Earth drills COMPAGNIE FRANCAISE DES PETROLES SA 18 March 1970 [19 March 1969] 56156/69 Heading E1F Rotary drill head, particularly for use in clay has a body 9 with a number of concentric rings of blades, and bores 11 for drilling mud. The height of the body increases and then falls along a radius, as indicated by the line 11, and the blades in a successive rings are offset circumferentially, so that they lie generally on a series of spirals (Fig. 10, not shown). The spaces between the spirals form channels for the discharge of spoil, and the depth of the recess forming the channels is at least equal to the height of the adjacent blades above the drill head body. The individual blades are slightly inclined to the radius from the axis, and the single blade in the innermost ring has one of its corners on the axis (Fig. 1, not shown). The outermost ring consists of blades 26 in a series of radial projections with cutting inserts 28 (Fig. 3) on their peripheral surfaces. The blades are angled in the direction of rotation as shown in Fig. 3, and are supported by buttressed formations 31 of the body. The blades are sintered compositions of (a) a carbide of tungsten, tantalum, titanium, chromium, niobium, molybdenum, or a number of such carbides, and (b) metallic cobalt, nickel and/or molybdenum. Diamonds may be embedded in the cutting surfaces of the blades, e.g. down to a depth of 2-20 mm. The body is a sintered composition of one or more of cobalt, molybdenum, tungsten carbide (WC or W 2 C) chromium carbide, titanium carbide, tantalum carbide. The body is sintered with the blades in place, and the sintering is carried out with a brazing composition initially above the body. This brazing melts and infiltrates into the body, and amounts to 25-60% of the body weight. Specific compositions of the blade material, the body material and the brazing are given in the Specification.
