Abstract
1310872 Chromatographic column packings C F SIMPSON 13 April 1970 [13 Jan 1969] 1963/69 Heading B1X A chromatographic column packing of particular use in liquid chromatography in which eluent passes through the column at pressures up to 3000 psig comprises an insoluble particulate solid such as silica gel or an amphoteric or acid metal oxide having reactive sites, such as alumina, to which a partitioning agent is chemically bonded, the bonded groups being philic with respect to the eluent to be employed. Suitable partitioning agents comprise (a) polyethylene or polypropylene glycols, (b) a polyester, (c) a polyamide, (d) a C 12+ straight chain alcohol, (e) cyanoethanol, (f) benzyl chloride or (g) an alkyl- and/or arylchlorosilane, such as triphenyl-chlorosilane. The column may comprise two or more particulate solid materials having the same or different partitioning agents, or one material of which part is bonded to one partitioning agent and part to another. The effluent from the column may be monitored by a moving wire detector. The separation of diterpenoid hydrocarbons on silica gel previously reacted with polypropylene glycol using a n-heptane-benzene mixture as eluent is described.
