Abstract
1310544 Degassing gas/liquid contact R KATZEN S S KATZEN V B DIEBOLD J K WALSH and W W KLINE [trading as RAPHAEL KATZEN ASSOCIATES] 3 June 1970 26798/70 Headings BIB B1F B1M and B1R In a gas/liquid contact process in which liquid is passed down the column 10, and gas is passed upwards, the arrangements of the baffles and the rates of flow are chosen so that f h between any two adjacent baffles is in the range of from 0.20-0.80 ft/see and f v is in the range of from 0.10-0.40 ft/sec but is less than f h , where and where U v is the average velosity in feet per second of the gas or vapour phase passing through the open areas at the levels of the two adjacent baffles concerned, U h is the average velocity in feet per second of the gas or vapour phase passing through the descending liquid phase between the two adjacent baffles, P v is the average density in lbs./ft<SP>3</SP> of the ascending gas or vapour phase at the temperature and pressure in the tower between the two adjacent baffles concerned, and P L is the density in pounds per cubic foot of the descending liquid phase at the temperature in the tower between the two adjacent baffles concerned. The method is commenced by passing the liquid down the tower at a rate sufficient to ensure that the height of the crest of the liquid phase on each baffle where the liquid phase overflows the edge of each baffle is stable and the crest is of substantially uniform height and is continuous along the said edge, so that the liquid phase overflows the edge of each baffle in a respective continuous curtain immediately adjacent said edge, and supplying the gas or vapour phase upwardly through the tower. The conditions of the process are chosen such that the liquid phase overflowing the baffle edges is dispersed into discrete droplets or froth by high velocity gas phase in the vertical spaces between adjacent adjacent baffles, and a decreased gas phase velocity is obtained in the open areas of the baffles permitting the major part of the liquid droplets as froth entrained in the ascending gas phase to coalesce and separate under gravity from the ascending gas phase. Examples relate to the steam stripping of gases from solutions. Examples also relate to stripping ethyl alcohol from sulphate and sulphite waste liquors with steam.
