Abstract

1309902 Echo sounders NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 10 June 1970 [28 March 1969] 16540/69 Heading H4D In a fish-finding sonar "unsymmetrical" waves, i.e. waves the two halves of each cycle of which have different forms, are transmitted and the receiver includes means for determining the polarity of echoes, Unlike echoes from rigid solid objects, echoes from fish exhibit reversal of polarity. In an embodiment a transducer 3 emits pulses on a carrier frequency f and a transducer 6, on frequency f/2. The outputs of transducers 7, 8 are equalized and the composite signal from amplifier 11 is applied in parallel to Schmitt triggers 12, 13 set to levels +V, -V, see also, Fig. 2 (not shown), which are connected respectively to the normal and resetting inputs of a counter 15; the counter produces an output only for fish echoes. A single transmit-receive transducer may be employed. Frequency f is suitably 500 kHz.
