Abstract
1309690 Measuring pitch of propellers CHADBURNS (RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT) Ltd 16 Sept 1971 [30 Dec 1970] 61879/70 Heading G1N In a supervision circuit for a controllable pitch ship's propellor, an alarm signal is generated if there is an error between the actual and desired pitch and the rate of change of the actual pitch is simultaneously less than a predetermined amount. In Fig.2, transducers 14 and 15 generate the desired and actual pitch signals respectively. The error signal is indicated at 29 and fed to comparators 30, 31 having positive and negative reference signals at 32, 33 respectively. The actual pitch signal is differentiated at 35 and fed to comparators 37, 38 having positive and negative reference signals at 39, 40. A logic circuit 34 includes a two second delay to allow for the response time of the system to avoid unnecessary alarms. If the engine is overloaded and the pitch has been reduced for this reason, transducer 19 inhibits an audible alarm 43, but a visible alarm 44 can still give warning. The servo system for the propellor may be mechanical, electric of fluid pressure operated. If a hydraulic system having two pumps is used relay 18 increases the sensitivity of the rate of change circuit when only one pump is working.
