1309496 Cationic synthetic latexes MITSUBISHI GAS CHEMICAL CO Inc 14 May 1971 [20 May 1970] 14994/71 Heading C3P A process for producing an aqueous dispersion of a copolymer wherein the polymer particles themselves have cationic charges comprises (1) copolymerizing by emulsion polymerization at least one halogen-containing ester of the formula or wherein R 1 is H or methyl, R 2 is C 1 -C 12 alkylene, R 3 is methylene or ethylene and X is Cl, Br or I, with at least one polymerizable comonomer selected from monoethylenically unsaturated compounds (other than the above halogen-containing monomers) and conjugated dienes, the amount of said halogen-containing ester being from 1-40% by weight based on total monomers, in the presence of at least one nonionic and/or cationic surface active agent and an emulsion polymerization initiator at a temperature of from - 5‹ to 100‹ C., and then (2) reacting a basic N-containing compound with the resultant copolymer latex to form an ammonium salt of the copolymer. Suitable comonomers for the halogen-containing acrylic or vinyl esters include styrene and its ring- substituted derivatives, alkyl (meth) acrylates, vinyl acetate, vinyl propionate, ethylene, vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride, isoprene and butadiene. The salt-forming base used may be ammonia or a primary, secondary or tertiary aliphatic or heterocylcic amine. Preferred as nonionic sufactants are polyoxyalkylene ethers and esters, sorbitan fatty acid esters and oxyethylene/oxypropylene block copolymers. Preferred cationic sufactants are alkylamine salts, quaternary ammonium salts and polyoxyethylene alkylamines. Suitable initiators include persulphates, hydrogen peroxide, organic peroxides and redox systems.
