Abstract

1308376 Control of two AC motors GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 9 July 1970 [15 July 1969] 33349/70 Heading H2J [Also in Division [F4 The moisture content of clothes in the drum 17 of a tumbler drier 10 is continuously sensed during drying as the electrical resistance of clothes bridging electrodes 62 and 63 the corresponding current being used to charge a timelag capacitor 96 to a voltage representative of the moisture content; when the voltage across the capacitor 96 reaches a predetermined level, transistors 92 and 83 conduct and current flows to the gate 73 of silicon controlled rectifier 70 so causing it to conduct (during appropriate half cycles of the alternating supply applied to terminals 65 and 66) so as to drive a timer motor 69 which cools the clothes by de-energizing electric heaters 34a and 34b while the A.C. motor 55 continues to rotate the drum 17 and a blower 53 to draw air through it and then interrupts the power supply to the whole apparatus. The timer motor 69 is of the hysteresis induction type, and may operate cams to control the switches for the drum motor 55 &c. Air is drawn into the drum 17 via annular inlet 36, heaters 34a and 34b, openings 37 in baffle 35, and annularly-arranged perforations 33 in the drum rear wall 22, and passes via perforations 47 in the inner wall 39 of the double-walled door 12, and aligned openings 48 and 49 in the door 12 and its frame 40, to a duct 50 having a lint trap 51 and leading via opening 52 to the blower 53 which exhausts it. Belt 58 extends entirely around the drum 17 and is tensioned at 59.
