Abstract

1308047 Scanning a pattern RANK ORGANISATION Ltd 18 Nov 1970 [15 Sept 1969] 45466/69 Heading G1A [Also in Division H4] In a device for scanning a pattern or design on a sheet 1 to provide a coded record of the pattern for use with knitting machines, a scanning head 6 carries the ends of a number of flexible light guides 12, 13a, 13b, Fig. 4, encased in a conduit 11, one light guide 12 transmitting light from a source 15 to successive areas being scanned, the other light guides receiving light reflected off the areas and transmitting the light via separate respective filters to separate detectors 16a, 16b. The scanning head 6 is moved by means of a travelling nut in the head 6 which mates with rotary screw 5 rotated by a motor 7 and reduction gears 9. The sheet 1 is mounted on a table 2 which is moved by a similar combination of parts, namely, rotary screw 3, reduction gearing 8 and motor 4. The scanning motors 4 and 7 may be stepping motors which are driven by means of a common scanning control and encoder unit 10. Each indexing of the motors 4 and 7 may be used to initiate automatic readout from the photo-electric elements 16a, 16b so that signals representative of successive discrete areas of the pattern are encoded in the unit 10. Fig. 4, shows the corresponding ends of three light guides merging at the scanning head, but in another embodiment Fig. 5 (not shown), the ends of the guides are maintained separate from one another. The photo-electric detectors may indicate the presence or absence of light of the colour passed by the associated filter by the presence or absence of an electrical signal. In this case the electric signals due to the different areas are stored as digital coded information representing the various colour components present.
