Abstract

1307928 A device for compressing refuse W E HENNELLS CO Inc 2 Nov 1970 [7 Nov 1969] 52042/70 Heading B8C A waste disposal device comprises a pair of identical waste receptacle assemblies 12, 13, accommodated, side-by-side in a cabinet 11, a waste receiving hopper 14, and a pair of extendible ram assemblies 16, 17 for compressing waste into bags 46 positioned within the assemblies 12, 13, each assembly comprising a cylindrical bag holder 31 which is mounted upon a swingable platform 32, the latter being pivoted to a side wall 24 of the cabinet 11. The pivotal mountings each comprise a pair of rising hinges 33, 33 so that, when an assembly 12 or 13 is situated in a cabinet compartment 27 beneath a ram 16, or 17, it rests upon the base 22 of the cabinet 11 to provide back-up support during a compression stroke of the ram and is raised off the base 22 when the assembly is swung open. Each holder 31 includes a bottom wall 34, side panels 36, 37 and a hinged door 36 with fasteners 43. A plastics bag 46 can be secured within a holder by folding its upper edge around a serrated plastics gripper member (49), Fig. 9, not shown, located around the rim of the holder (31) or, by clamping the upper edges of the bag (46) and holder together by a holding ring (52), Fig. 10, not shown. The hopper 14, is supported in the cabinet 11 by means of a shoulder 88, and has two funnel portions 83, which are separated by a rib 84 and have outlet openings 82 located over the holders 31, a back and side splash 86, and a shoot 87. Each ram assembly 16, 17 comprises an inner cylinder 97 which is secured to a head plate 96 fixed to the top wall 21 of the cabinet and two telescopically arranged intermediate and outer cylinders 104, 111 respectively, the outer sleeve carrying a compactor shoe 92. The cylinders 104, 111 are extended to compress waste in the respective holders 31 by introducing compressed air, through a duct 101 and central pipe 99, into a space between the shoe 92 and a closure plate 98 for the lower end of the cylinder 97. The cylinders 104, 111 are retracted by directing the compressed air through a duct 102, into the cylinder 97 from where it passes into the two annular spaces 108, 114 formed between all three of the cylinders 97, 104, 111 as parts 109, 116 respectively in the cylinders 104, 111 become open to the annular spaces. Pressurized air is provided by a compressor 122 which is driven by a motor 123, and when a push-pull valve 126, Fig. 1, is pulled outwardly, a pneumatic circuit (128), Fig. 11, not shown, arranges for the ram assemblies 16, 17, to be alternately actuated, one cylinder being completely returned to its retracted position before the other cylinder is extended. After the bags have been filled the valve 126 is pushed inwardly whereupon the rams are stopped in their retracted positions and each filled bag can be removed from the respective assembly 12, or 13, by grasping the panel 36 and swinging the assembly 12 outwardly before the latches 43 are released, the door 36 opened, and the bag released. The device may comprise a single assembly, Fig. 12, (not shown).
