Abstract

1307898 Separating gases, regeneration of adsorbent ALCO STANDARD CORP 16 March 1970 12629/70 Heading B1L In an adsorption-desorption two bed gas separation system for the removal of, e.g. CO 2 , H 2 O, H 2 S, or NH 3 from, e.g. H 2 , He, N 2 , Ar, Ne, Kr or O 2 desorption is carried out at reduced pressure by using a first roughing jet pump and a second booster pump of the lobe type to attain a two-stage pressure reduction to 100 mm Hg or below. One bed adsorbs whilst the other is being desorbed and repressurised. As shown gas is supplied via line 18a or 18b to the bed 14 or 16 on adsorption containing a 5Š zeolite sieve. Purified gas emerges via lines 20a or 20b and 20 upon desorption a metered amount of purified gas is passed as a purge via thin diameter lines 30, and 24a or 24b. Water pump jet 36 produces an initial rough vacuum of 176 mm Hg and a booster lobe pump 38 is automatically switched on at a preset level to enable a finer vacuum to be attained, i.e. 100 mm Hg. Impurities desorped are either vented or drained from a separating chamber 40 via lines 56, 70 respectively. The desorbed bed is repressurised by opening valve 34 in wider diameter line 26. The water pump Fig. 2 (not shown) incorporates a centrifugal pump and venturi tube.
