Abstract
1307671 Refuelling aircraft FLIGHT REFUELLING Ltd (P S MACGREGOR) 4 June 1970 [4 March 1969] 11396/69 Heading B7G [Also in Division B8] An air to air refuelling hose reel apparatus includes a constant tension spring motor 21 coupled to the hose reel 6 to apply a substantially constant tension to the hose during reeling in or out thereof. The motor 21 comprises four pairs of constant tension spiral springs 25 mounted on their individual bobbins and all windable on to a common hub in driving engagement with the hose reel 6, the springs being wound on to the hub to store energy during pay out of the hose and operative to apply a constant tension to the hose during refuelling. A motor 22 using the fuel as a driving fluid is in driving connection with the hose reel through a gear-box 23 sprag clutch 24, and is used to wind in hose against air drag force on a refuelling drogue at the free end of the hose, the motor being used as a pump to retard pay out of the hose which is effected by the air drag on the drogue. The motor or pump mode for the motor 22 is set by a valve 16 in parallel in the fuel supply circuit with a refuelling transfer valve 17 and a fuel jettison valve 18, all supplied from a fuel pump 3 driven by a ram air turbine 2, controllable in response to the pumped fuel pressure. Ratchet teeth 30 on the periphery of the reel 6 are engageable with a spring pawl 29 controlled by a mechanism 28 to brake the reel. Fluid pressure is applied to and exhausted from the mechanism 28 to release and engage the pawl 29 during hose wind in and when the hose is fully wound respectively. The mechanism is also operable by a roller engaging the spring 25 wound on the hub when sufficient spring layers have been wound during hose pay out, whereupon the reel is braked at full pay out. A further roller engageable with the accumulating layers of spring on the hub, is associated with control gear for reducing the pay out speed as full pay out of the hose is approached, and for actuating the refuelling transfer valve.
