Abstract

1307642 Coated glass ASAHI GLASS CO Ltd 7 April 1970 [7 April 1969] 16358/70 Heading C7F [Also in Division H5] An electrically heated window for motor vehicles, capable of operation on 12 or 24 volts, comprises a three layer film 2, 3, 4 deposited on a glass substate 1, the film having an electrical resistivity of less than 3 ohms per square and the window having a visible light transmission of more than 70%, when combined with another glass sheet (not shown), the conductive layer 3 being of at least 50% silver and of a thickness 200 to 300 angstroms, and the surrounding layers 2, 4, being of non- light absorbing dielectric material of a thickness 70 to 550 angstroms and a refractive index greater than 1À7. Layer 3 may be up to 50% copper, and the balance silver. Alternatively, it is composed of less than 10% by weight of one or more of chromium, nickel, aluminium and titanium, with the balance silver. Layers 2, 4, are of ZnS, Fe 2 O 3 , TiO 2 , Bi 2 O 3 , preferably, or P6O, SnO 2 , ZrO 2 , ThO 2 , Ta 2 O 5 , Nb 2 O 5 , WO 3 , CdS, PbS or ZnSa. The flow is applied by vacuum deposition, the materials being evaporated from boats in a vacuum chamber at 10<SP>-4</SP> to 10<SP>-7</SP> torr. The silver or metal oxide may alternatively be deposited by cathodic sputtering or other deposition techniques, e. g. the silver 3 may be formed by non-electrolytic plating and the layers 2, 4 by thermal decomposition or chemical vapour deposition. The film 2, 3, 4 is covered with a protective, abrasion-resistant material and assembled with another glass sheet in a laminated or double glazing unit.
