1307604 Heat pumps TEMPERATURE Ltd 19 April 1971 [5 March 1970] 10721/70 Heading R4H A heat pump unit comprises a compressor 1, a first coil 16 for heat exchange between the refrigerant and the ambient atmosphere, a second coil 9 for heat exchange between the refrigerant and an external medium such as air or water, an expansion capillary 14 extending between the coils, and a reversing valve 6, the unit being characterized by a capillary connection 20 in the refrigerant circuit between a part 15 of the circuit connecting the first coil 16 and the expansion capillary 14 and the inlet 2 of the compressor 1. The capillary connection 20 ensures that there is always some liquid induced into the compressor when it is running, so that the liquid can evaporate and provide adequate cooling of the compressor. The capillary connection 20 to the part 15 of the circuit may either be normal to or at an angle to the direction of refrigerant flow.
