Abstract

1307126 Nerve stimulators for dental applications B JANKELSON 4 Sept 1970 [5 Sept 1969] 42521/70 Heading A5R A stimulator for dental applications comprises a pulse generator 16 connected to input electrodes 10 and a common return electrode 14, and a support for fitting on the head so that the electrodes 10 are located in contact with the skin over the roots of the mandibular and facial nerves and the electrode 14 contacts the back of the head so that the masticatory and facial muscles are contracted in co-ordination. The nerves may be stimulated with pulses at about 40 pulses per minute using 10 to 35 volts, the output current being controlled by a control 24. The electrodes 10 are both normally connected to one pole of the generator but a switch 22 allows individual connection so that the resistance of the two circuits from electrodes 10 to electrode 14 can be checked to ensure equality of current flow through the electrodes 10. This check is effected using a switch 29 which applies 1.5 volts d.c. between the electrode 14 and chosen electrode 10, the current flow being indicated by a meter 28. The apparatus may be used to aid in the diagnosis of the comparative degree of relaxation or contractive of the muscles on each side of the face, to cause the mandible to close to allow determination of the horizontal myocentric and vertical positions of occlusion, and to take dental impressions. To register the initial contact points of worn teeth to allow occlusal adjustment of worn natural dentition or of existing bridgework at an overdosed vertical height, wax or carbon paper is placed between the teeth and the fifth and seventh cranial nerves are stimulated by the apparatus using an "overclosure" control 26 which allows stimulation at variable currents at about 110 pulses per minute.
