Abstract

1306743 Boots &c B S C FOOTWEAR Ltd 19 April 1971 [13 April 1970] 17384/70 Heading A3B [Also in Division B5] A method of making articles, e.g. boots and shoes, from a leather or leather substitute, e.g. polyurethane, comprises heating, e.g. by steam, a piece 15 of the material so that it will deform over a former 14, placing a flexible, e.g. rubber diaphragm 31, over the piece 15 and applying vacuum between the former and the diaphragm via a pipe 18, so that the piece 15 is drawn around the former. In Fig. 1 the former is shaped to define the fore parts of two shoe uppers which can be arranged as the left and right parts of a pair. The pieces are cut to shape, Fig. 2 not shown, possibly with small nicks (37), Fig. 3, not shown, to prevent creasing of the marginal undersurface (33) of the formed piece, and located over the former by finger clamps 25, 26, 27, 28. The diaphragm is held in a frame 29, 30, 13 which can be lowered until the diaphragm engages the pieces and holds them against the former 14. The clamps are removed, and the edge 30 of the frame 29, and the edge 13 of a table 11 from a seal. Vacuum is applied through a pipe 18, and the diaphragm draws the pieces on to the former and turns under the edges. The pieces are heated at any suitable point in the procedure. After cooling the vacuum is released. In Figs. 4, 5 and 6 a former support (38) is shaped to prevent undue stretching of the diaphragm. The apparatus in Figs. 7 to 10 not shown, forms a pair of shoe backs. The finger clamps can be replaced by retaining pins, clips, adhesive, vacuum or pressure devices.
