Abstract

1306693 Tetraoxan polymerization DAICEL Ltd and UBE INDUSTRIES Ltd 26 May 1970 [26 May 1969 20 June 1969 9 March 1970 4 April 1970] 25112/70 Heading C3P Oxymethylene polymers, which may contain units derived from a thiirane, a thiocyanate or a trithianoxide either as comonomer, on chainends or on the stem of the polymer, are obtained by the polymerization of tetraoxan in the presence of sulphur, carbon disulphide, or certain specified classes of organic sulphur compounds. The polymerization is suitably carried out with solid phase monomer, and may be further promoted by the use of ionizing radiation or ultra-violet light, either prior to or during the polymerization. In examples the sulphur compound is CS 2 , methyl thiocyanate, trithian, dimethyl disulphide, methyl thioglycolate, methyl sulphide, S, thiourea, thiocetamide, ethylene trithiocarbonate, tetrahydrothiophen, ethylene thiourea, diethyl- or dimethyl-sulphate, dimethyl sulphone, dimethyl sulphoxide, glycol sulphite, dimethyl sulphite, ethylene-, propylene- and cyclohexene sulphide, methyl- or benzyl-thiocyanate, trimethylene tri-sulphone, tetrahydrothiophen-1-oxide or -1-dioxide, dihydrothiophen-1-oxide, thiophen and tetramethylene sulphone. Comparative experiments with trioxan are described.
