Abstract

1306064 Microwave heating HIRST (MICROWAVE HEATING) Ltd 10 March 1970 [10 Dec 1968] 58567/68 Heading H5H A strip 3 of non-uniform cross-section, e.g. for use as a rubber sealing strip for a car window, is passed through a waveguide 10 on a conveyer belt 4 so that its thickest portion 3a lies in the relatively high intensity area of the microwave field (i.e. it lies on the axis of the waveguide) and the thinner portion 3b lies in the areas of relatively low intensity, the strip being simultaneously heated from a source other than a microwave source to ensure uniform heating. As shown a fan heater 27 circulates air through the waveguide 10 via tubing 26, manifold boxes 25 and perforated ends 24 of the waveguide 10. Alternatively infra-red elements clad in asbestos may surround the waveguide or steam can be used. The conveyer 4 is supported within waveguide 10 by U-shaped support brackets 12, 14, biased upwardly to tension the belt by springs. Magnetrons 18 supply energy to waveguides 16 tuned by axially adjustable end walls 20, interconnected by a centre section 10c of waveguide 10 and respectively joined to two end portions 10a, 10b which may act as chokes or be provided with waterloads. The strip 3 is extruded on to the belt 4 and may be cut to size after heating.
