1305425 Chlorination of aromatic compounds DOW CHEMICAL CO. 13 March 1970 12190/70 Heading C2C A process for chlorinating aromatic compounds comprises reacting SCl 3 AlCl 4 with a compound of formula wherein R 1 , R 2 , R 3 and R 4 are each independently hydrogen, halogen, perhaloalkyl of 1-3 carbon atoms wherein R is hydrogen, halogen or perhaloalkyl of 1-3 carbon atoms, at a temperature between 50-110‹ C. in an inert reaction solvent. The following compounds are prepared in the examples: perchloro-p-xylene; perchloro-pbitolyl; perchloro-triphenylmethane; and decachloroxylene.
