Abstract

1305021 Radar TELECOMMUNICATIONS RADIOELECTRIQUES ET TELEPHONIQUES 8 Sept 1960 [8 Sept 1959] 31042/60 Heading H4D A radar triggering arrangement in which the beat signal between a frequency modulated emitted wave and a wave reflected from a target is used to produce a triggering signal when the target lies within the polar diagrams of the transmitting and receiving aerials, these being cones with a small common volume, comprises a transmitter adapted to produce a frequency modulated output having a wobbulation of such amplitude and frequency that mechanical resonances, and hence undesired microphony effects, are neglible, an amplifier through which the beat signal is passed and having a slope substantially corresponding to the increase of the slope of the curve of the energy reflected by an obstacle as a function of the distance of the obstacle, a counter of the number of cycles of amplitude modulation of the output of the amplifier, means for periodically resetting the counter to zero, and means for producing a triggering signal when the number of cycles counted equals a predetermined number. In Fig. 3 the transmitter 1 is a reflex klystron the reflector of which is modulated by a wobbulated sinusoidal oscillator 4. Signals from the receiver aerials are added to the transmitted signals and passed through filters 7, 71; detectors 8, 81; and amplifiers 9, 9<SP>1</SP> to a mixer 10. The difference output from mixer 10 is passed through a filter 12, which removes any amplitude modulation caused by amplitude modulation of the klystron, to a high-pass mean-frequency amplifier 13 the response curve of which has a slope of 12 db. per octave. It is explained in the Specification that if a target is present in the volume to which the apparatus is sensitive, the output of amplifier 13 will contain an amplitude modulation of twice the wobbulation frequency; this modulation is detected by detector 14 and amplified by a low frequency amplifier 15. Unit 16 is a level comparator which produces a pulse of constant width and amplitude in response to each positive peak input of sufficient amplitude, and a pulse counter 17 counter 17 counts the output of unit 16. Unit 18 is an integrator unit periodically reset to zero by unit 19, and when unit 18 counts up to a number of pulses which is fixed in advance a signal is sent to stage 20 to produce a triggering signal. When the mean reflector potential of klystron 1 is properly adjusted there is substantially no amplitude modulation at wobbulation frequency; if the mean reflector potential drifts away from the optimum the phase of the amplitude modulation produced indicates the sign of the deviation, and this phase is measured by comparing in unit 11 a sum output from unit 10 with an output from oscillator 4; the output of unit 11 is applied through unit 3 to control the mean reflector potential of the klystron 1.
