Abstract

130,490. Ellis, R. E., (Adcock, F.). Aug. 20, 1918. Bearings, determining wirelessly; directive wireless signalling; acrials.-In means for determining the bearing of a transmitting station, the aerials are arranged with a vertical component, to receive the radiation, the horizontal component being arranged so that the effect upon it of the radiation is reduced to a minimum. Fig. 1 illustrates the principle on which the invention is based. The leads E, F and G, H from the vertical aerial AB to the coil CD of the radiogoniometer or other receiving instrument are placed close together and may be twisted together so as to be jointly non-receptive to radiation falling upon them. Fig. 3 shows one method of connecting pairs of aerials 11, 15 and 6, 7 to the coils 5, 10 of a radiogoniometer in a station for determining bearings. The leads 13, 18 from the aerials 11, 15 pass near the ground to the earths 16, 12 of the other aerial of the pair, and these leads are placed close together, or twisted together as already explained. Instead of earthing the aerials they may be unearthed, the leads to the radiogoniometer passing from their mid-points. The pairs of aerials may be made rotata.ble.
