Abstract
130,430. White, C. Grahame-, and Sidgwick, K. I. Feb. 23, 1918. Steering and balancing.-In a dual control gear for aircraft and other purposes, two wheels G, H, corresponding to the two controls, are loosely mounted on a shaft A at opposite sides of a sleeve B fixed to the shaft, and either wheel may be coupled to the sleeve by pins C, which are normally pressed into engagement with holes in the wheel G by springs D, but may be withdrawn therefrom and moved into engagement with holes in the wheel H, by means of a sliding member E connected to the pins by arms F. The member E is actuated by connexions J, K to a spring L, which may be extended by means of a lever M<1>, so as to overcome the springs D. A lever M<1> is provided adjacent the pilot, and a similar lever is arranged on the same shaft M<2> adjacent the observer, so that either can take over the control, and the shaft A is connected to the elevator controls, similar clutch devices being provided for the aileron and rudder controls, all the clutches being operated from the same levers M<1>. In a modification, the spring L is arranged within the shaft A. Worm gear and hand-wheels may replace the levers M<1>.
