Abstract

1303784 Thermistors STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd 28 Oct 1971 [3 March 1971] 5886/71 Heading H1K An impedance element, e.g. a thermistor, has its terminals connected to respective closed loops of wire secured to a support structure, external connection being made to parts of the loops remote from the terminals. Typically, Fig. 1, a thermistor bead made of zirconium oxide mixed with 25% by weight of a rare earth oxide is located in a ceramic cement filled chamber 1a at one end of fused silica support 1. Its platinum terminals 3, 4 are attached to loops of wire 5, 6 extending through holes in the support as shown. Alternatively the support is replaced by a rod of cruciform section fitting closely within a tube with the wire loops extending between the limbs of the cruciform. In other possible structures the support is rectangular in section, has a recess or ledge at one end to accommodate the thermistor, and parallel grooves in one or in two opposed faces to accommodate the wire loops which are held in position by a coating of cement which also surrounds the thermistor bead. The resulting assembly may in all cases be provided with a stainless steel metal sheath for use in a flame detector. Alternative materials for the support are alumina and alumina-silica ceramic.
