Abstract

1303708 Differential thermometer; gas analysis G J MALECKI 9 March 1970 11095/70 Headings G1B G1D and G1N A differential thermometer comprises a closed tube 12 having a biphasic system each end and a column 29 of indicating liquid, the surface tension between the indicating liquid and the biphasic systems or the wall of the tube having been lowered by a surface active agent in the form of an additive to the indicating liquid or the biphasic system or in the form of a coating on the walls of the tube. The biphasic systems may be gasliquid, gas-solid or liquid-vapour, and numerous examples of these, of the indicating liquid and of the surface active agent are given. The movement of the indicating liquid may be measured visually, photographically, by measuring the resistance of a wire 31 dipping into the indicating liquid, by measuring the capacitance between two wires dipping into the indicating liquid, only measuring the capacitance between plates either side of the indicating liquid, Fig.7 (not shown). Two short contact wires may be provided to be connected by the indicating liquid when this is mercury to indicate the attainment of a particular differential temperature, Fig.1 (not shown). The differential thermometer may be used as a detector in a differential thermal analysis unit and in an infrared gas analyzer, Fig.3 (not shown). For use in gas analysis, a gas stream containing an oxidizable gas is split into two streams, one stream passing to each bulb, Figs.1 and 2 (not shown). At one bulb the oxidizable gas is oxidized over a catalyst, while at the other bulb a non- active substance is provided. A temperature differential thus occurs and is measured by the differential thermometer. Gases which may be analyzed include CO (hopcalite catalyst) SO 2 (palladium) and hydrogen (platinum). A gas containing hydrocarbons, CO and H 2 may be analyzed by passing it in turn to a unit containing a CO catalyst, a unit containing a H 2 catalyst, a tube containing a nickel catalyst for cracking the hydrocarbons,a further unit containing a CO catalyst and a further unit containing a H 2 catalyst. A branch stream may be passed to a unit containing a SO 3 catalyst.
