In the case of a tape or wire record 1, Fig. 3, the stepby-step drive unit 5 acts directly on the record 1 which is pulled past a recording/playback head 3 in a continuous movement due to the action of a mechanical low-pass filter comprising a light roller 7 and a damped spring lever 8. With a drum or a disc record 1, Fig. 4, the step-bystep drive unit 5 acts on a drive belt 14 which together with a light turntable 15 constitutes the mechanical low-pass filter. In both constructions, the step length of the drive unit 5 is controlled by a servo system in which signals from a tachometer 11 are compared with reference signals, which may be varied, from a source 12.
