Abstract
1302380 Sonic gas analysis F C BROOKER 21 Dec 1970 [22 Dec 1969] 62339/69 Heading H4D A method of analysing a gas by comparison with another gas includes comparing the phase displacement of sonic waves propagated through the test gas in a tube or column with the phase displacement of sonic waves propagated through a reference gas in said tube or column, the reference phase displacement being represented by an electrical equivalent circuit. Air containing CO 2 e.g. from glasshouse, public room, tunnel &c. is analysed by being drawn into tube 8 through moisture filler 17 and CO 2 trap 16. Oscillator 1 drives crystal transducer 7 and the propagated sound wave is received by an identical transducer 10. The oscillator output is also fed through a phase shift network 2 to a monostable 4. The transducer 10 output is also fed to a monostable 13. The outputs from monostables 4, 13 are fed to coincidence gate 5 whose output drives a meter 6. The phase shift network is adjusted until the meter reads zero. The tap 15 is changed over to admit contaminated air to the tube wherein the meter will indicate the phase difference between the monostable inputs. Alternatively the phase shift network may include a calibrated variable resistance which is adjusted until the meter reads zero. In either case the calibration may be in ppm. The tube 8 is open to the atmosphere at the far end 11 in order to preserve isobaric conditions for the two measurements. The measurement output signal may be used to actuate an alarm or to control ventilation apparatus.
