Abstract
1302265 Glass filament manufacture FIBREGLASS Ltd 28 May 1971 [9 June 1970] 27998/70 Heading C1M Glass filaments are drawn from molten glass 1 at a viscosity of at least 1000 poises by bring- ing a set of baits 8 into contact with the glass, moving the baits away from the glass 1 and transferring the drawn filaments to winding means 11, meniscus constraining means 4, 5 being provided at or near the glass surface to restrain the menisci from coalescing together. The drawing may be vertically upward or downward or at any angle between the vertical and horizontal. The baits 8 are preferably hollow, such as steel hypodermic needles, with slight suction applied thereto and are mounted in holders 6, 7 to be aligned with a series of apertures 5 in a metal plate 4 or wire grid. The holders 6, 7 are separately mounted on frames 12 and can be lowered together or independently. The baits 8 are freed from the filaments as by moving each set into sharp contact with stops on frame 12. The molten glass 1 may be electrically heated and additionally plate 4 may be heated, the glass preferably having a viscosity of 5-6000 poises.
