Abstract

1302177 Conjugate filaments IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 24 Dec 1969 [7 Jan 1969 5 May 1969] 1034/69 and 22710/69 Headings B5B and B5N [Also in Division C3] A method of bonding a polyamide to a substrate material comprises incorporating 0À01 to 30 wt. per cent of polyvinyl alcohol in the polyamide and allowing the so-modified polyamide to solidify from the melt in contact with the substrate. Particular bonding applications specified are (a) melt-spun bicomponent filaments and fibres, e.g. side-by-side or sheath-core polyamide/polyester, the polyvinyl alcohol being incorporated in the polyamide component; (b) filled or reinforced polyamide mouldings the polyvinyl alcohol being incorporated in the polyamide to enhance adhesion to the filler or reinforcement; and (c) the use of polyamide incorporating polyvinyl alcohol as a laminating adhesive. Examples employ nylons 66, 68, 610 and 6 and polyvinyl alcohols of viscosities between 4 and 60 c.p. as a 4% aqueous solution at 20‹ C. and degrees of hycholysis between 73À4 and 98À4 and illustrate application (a) by a 26 filament 140 denier SO/SO side by side nylon 66/polyethylene terephthalate bi-component fibre; (b) by chopped glass strand, kaolin or alumina filled nylon 66; and (c) by laminates of unmodified nylon 66 web to Al or glass and of Al/Cu/Bi/Pb alloy titanium metal strips and stainless steel to themselves. The invention of Specification 1,247,669 is disclaimed.
