1301010 Photographic type composing; selective printing W H BRADY CO 16 Sept 1970 [29 Sept 1969] 44150/70 Headings B6F and B6W A device, for making labels e.g. a hand-held device, has a housing 11 for a supply 16 of ultra.violet light sensitive tape 15, feed means, e.g. rubber coated rollers 27, 28, for incrementally advancing the tape along a path through the housing past an image forming station, a movable character bearing member for selective positioning of characters at the station, e.g. a manually rotatable character disc 56, and ultra-violet light flash producing means, e.g. a flash tube 109, for exposure of the tape at the station to form characters thereon. A battery operated charging circuit 116 may be triggered by a lever 12 to cause the tube 109, housed in a reflector 110, to flash, the lever also causing an anvil 62 to clamp the tape against the character disc during exposure. Characters may be formed on the disc photographically or by printing, a character being held at the image forming station by a spring element engaging disc grooves 68, a corresponding character, also on the disc, simultaneously appearing at an observation window (58), Fig. 3 (not shown), to facilitate character selection. The characters can be letters, numbers or names. The disc may have knives (71), (72) Fig. 8 (not shown) thereon to cut a label from the tape. The tape may be of paper, cloth, film or foil having an adhesive backing, an ultraviolet light sensitive layer, which changes colour on exposure to ultra-violet light, and a protective top layer. An incandescent visible light source may be incorporated in the device to deactivate the ultra-violet light sensitive layer of the tape after exposure.
