Abstract

Levels and clinometers.-Clinometers &c. for measuring or indicating angular direction, of the kind in which a pivoted arm C carrying a level B or sighting-instrument is pressed by a spring E against the end of a rotating nut G which serves to measure the angle recorded, are constructed so that the parts most affected by wear are readily interchangeable and can be adjustably set in any instrument, so that special calibration of each instrument is unnecessary. With this object, the invention consists in forming the cam J so that equal angular movements of the arm C will be effected by equal rotational movements of the nut G, and in making the cam axially adjustable along the arm C so that the point of contact with the nut can be varied. The use of this special cam enables the known form of scale inscribed on a helix on the rotating nut to be replaced by a fixed straight-line equally-divided scale K for the degrees, and a circular equally-divided scale g for the lesser graduations. The axial adjustment of the cam is effected by a screwed rod c<3> having lock-nuts c<4>, c<5> engaging the opposite sides of a lug. Clamping-screws c, c<1> secure the cam in the adjusted position. The instrument may be used in various ways; for example, the base may be placed upon an inclined surface and the angle of inclination measured by adjusting the arm to an horizontal position by means of the level, or, for direct measurement of the angular distance between two points, a sighting-instrument may be mounted on and parallel to the base, and a second sight on the arm in place of the level. This form of instrument with two sights can be arranged to measure angles in azimuth by arranging the nut horizontally instead of vertically.
