Abstract

1300767 Lamp failure indicator; road traffic signals on vehicles WESTFALISCHE METALL INDUSTRIE KG HUECK & CO 6 May 1970 [8 May 1969] 21731/70 Headings G4N and G4Q In an indicator lamp system for a road vehicle, resistors R1 and R2 are switched in series with the lamps BLh in order to dim them, by means of a relay TN actuated by the main light switch LS. The relay TN actuates contacts tn1 and tn2. When the resistors R1 and R2 are in series with the lamps, loads R3 and C1, and R4 and C2 are connected in parallel with the lamps. During the time when the current passes to the lamps in a flash period, current flows through resistors R3 and R4 and is stored on capacitors C1 and C2. Thus the total current drawn by the lamp circuit is the same regardless of whether resistors R1 and R2 are connected into the circuit, provided the component values are suitably adjusted. During the time in which no current flows, i.e. between flashes the capacitor C1 discharges itself via the lamp. If a lamp failure occurs, the capacitor C1 is unable to discharge between flashes, and so is unable to carry any current during the flash. This means the current drawn from the flasher unit BG is reduced to zero and a current monitoring device (not shown) is therefore able to detect lamp failure. The diodes D1 and D2 prevent the capacitor discharging via the front lamps BLv.
