Abstract
1300662 Lasers COMPAGNIE GENERALE D'ELECTRICITE 23 April 1970 [24 April 1969] 19655/70 Heading H1C A gas laser has an annular active medium, e.g. of CO 2 , confined between two conductive coaxial discharge electrodes 1, 5, connected to a line 9 from a power supply 8 via a gastight coaxial socket 11, 12. The inner electrode may be a rod or a tube. A further socket 14, 15, allows the electrodes to be shorted together. Gas ports T 1 , T 2 are provided, and the active medium may be stationary or in flow. The laser is closed by Brewster windows 6, 7. In Fig. 2, the coaxial power supply socket 19, 20, 21 is aligned with the inner electrode 17 and supports a resonator mirror 22. The outer electrode 18 is sheathed by insulating tube 24 which supports a second mirror 24. A short circuiting socket is again provided. The laser may be arranged in an amplifying chain, Fig. 3 (not shown), in which a Q switched laser acts as a generator and the active media of the chain are sequentially pumped. Laser devices of differing apertures may be used in the chain if matched by afocal lens systems. The laser may also be used continuously, and the electrodes may be cooled by fluid supplied through ducts (not shown).
