Abstract

1300571 Polyacrylic acid/metal oxide surgical cements NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 8 May 1970 [16 May 1969] 25020/69 Addition to 1139430 Headings C3N and C3P A surgical cement similar to that disclosed in Specification 1,139,430 (N.R.D.C.) which hardens after remaining plastic for sufficient time for it to be formed into a desired shape, comprises a mixture of a surgically acceptable grade of metal oxide powder, a water soluble polymer of acrylic acid having a viscosity determined molecular weight of 5000 to 250,000, and water, the weight of acrylic acid polymer being from 20 to 60% of the combined weight of acrylic acid polymer and water, and the ratio by weight of the metal oxide powder to water and polymer, being from 0À5 : 1 to 4 : 1. Anything disclosed or claimed in the main patent, 1,139,430, is disclaimed. The preferred polymer is polyacrylic acid and the preferred metal oxide is ZnO, although others specified are MgO (Example 1), BiO, CdO, HgO, CaO, CuO, SrO, BaO and AgO. A mixture, e.g. of ZnO and MgO (Example 4) may also be used. Preferably the polymer is dissolved in water, prior to the addition of the metal oxide. The composition may take the form of a two component pack, one pack containing the polymer solution, and the other containing the metal oxide. The compositions are especially applicable to dentistry. In examples polymers of acrylic acid are made by polymerizing acrylic acid in water containing isopropanol, with an initiator of ammonium persulphate.
