Abstract
1300484 Cathode-ray tube display INTERNATIONAL STANDARD ELECTRIC CORP 19 Nov 1970 [27 Nov 1969] 54993/70 Heading H4T An arrangement for generating bright-up signals for a mixed display of graphs and alphanumeric characters (for example for data on hospital patients) for a T.V. type raster scan comprises a memory 1 and register 3 which receives numerical and character data from a computer, a memory 5 and symbol generator 7 for producing under control of unit 4 the bright-up signals for the characters to be displaced, and a system (enclosed in broken lines) for generating the graphical bright-up pulses for adding to the character signals in mixer 8. As described each graph is specified by eighty points spaced equally along the X (line) scan, the Y values of these points each being represented by a 7-bit code so that 80 7-bit words are supplied to and held in memory 6 for as many horizontal line scans as are required for the graphical display of this data (a number of graphs may be displayed one under another). These 7-bit words are read out at the appropriate point of each scan and held in calculator 9, where an interpolation between successive ordinate values is carried out. This is done by calculating the increment by subtraction, dividing by eight (by a 3-bit shift) and adding this eighth eight times as the line scan travels over one-eightieth of the graph length. The result of this calculation is continuously compared with the vertical position derived from the line scan count to produce bright-up pulses at equality; or when the inequality changes. This process continues until the scan reaches an area for display of another graph, when new ordinate data replaces that held in memory 6. In a modification increment of the ordinate values are supplied from the computer instead of their absolute values, these increments being devided by eight and accumulated in the manner described above.
