Abstract

1299877 Making pipes CIBA-GEIGY AG 3 Nov 1969 32908/72 Divided out of 1299873 Heading F2P [Also in Division B8] In a continuous pipe-making process for fibre-reinforced plastics pipe, an air impervious former T is continuously produced on an axially stationary rotatable mandrel Figs. (4), 4A, 4B, (4C and 4D) and may remain as an integral liner of the completed pipe. The leading end of the pipe P is sealed with a plug C and compressed air is introduced into the pipe through the end 50 of the mandrel which is sealed at B relatively to the advancing pipe, so that fluid pressure, which is exerted between the mandrel and plug seal C, drives the pipe forwardly through the winding heads I 1 , I 2 and I 3 and resin applicators J, J 1 , J 2 and J 3 . The fibre and resin build-up is applied at these locations as described in Specification 1,299,878. As shown, the former T is produced by applying epoxy resin from head 208 to strips d of tissue paper and spreading the resin evenly across the strip by means of a moving, flexible endless steel doctor blade 188. Heater 310 (Fig. 2) causes the resin to soak through the strip d before winding. The strips d are wound on flexible endless non-stick belts 104 and 106 (Figs. 4A and 4B) forming a moving sleeve carried along, in sliding contact with sleeve 102, by the advancing pipe. Each band of strips d is partially cured by heaters 312, before leaving the belts 104 and 106. Before the fibre and resin build-up is applied, the former passes through a cooling device 316 (Fig. 1A). In another form (Figs. 29-31, not shown), a strippable tube, lining the former T, is made of gummed paper tape, as described in the parent Specification 1,299,873. The use of a non- strippable tape of resin-impregnated glass fibre is additionally disclosed. A thick resin liner may be put under compression by winding on a glass tape at a waisted portion of the mandrel. The former (T<SP>1</SP>) may be removable from the completed pipe.
