Abstract

1299806 Stabilizing olefin polymers IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 30 July 1971 [21 Aug 1970] 40420/70 Heading C3P Oolefin polymers are stabilized with (a) an alkoxyphenol of formula where R 1 is C 1-4 alkyl, R 2 and R 3 are C 1-10 alkyl or C 1-4 alkoxy; (b) a thioester where R 4 and R 5 are C 6-20 alkyl and n and m are 2 or 3; and (c) a phenolic antioxidant other than (a). The olefin polymer may be a polymer of ethylene, propylene, butene-1 and/or 4-methylpentene-1. Preferred thioesters are dilauryl, dimyristyl, dihexadecyl and distearyl thiodipropionates. Specified antioxidants include (3,5 - di - t. - butyl - 4 - hydroxyphenyl)- propionates, thio and methylene bisphenols, tris(hydroxybenzyl) benzenes and isocyanurates and tris(hydroxyphenyl) butanes. The compositions may also contain conventional ingredients, and examples describe compositions comprising polypropylene, 2,6 - di - t. - butyl - 4 - methoxyphenol, distearyl thiodipropionate, pentaerythrityl tetra - # - (3,5 - di - t. - butyl - 4 - hydroxyphenyl) propionate and calcium stearate.
