Abstract

1299677 Dental aspiration apparatus PENNWALT CORP 2 Aug 1971 [6 Aug 1970] 36289/71 Heading A5R A dental evacuation apparatus comprises a plurality of separate suction devices for removing debris from a patient's mouth, e.g. a cuspidor, an aspirator and a saliva ejector, a separator 26 common to said devices and having separate discharge ports for gas, liquid and solids, separate suction lines 20, 24, and 22 (Fig. 5) connecting each suction device to the separator, a venturi 28, 32, 30 in each of said suction lines, a compressed air line 44, 48, 46 connected to each venturi for supplying compressed air thereto, thereby to apply suction to the respective suction device, a valve 38, 42, 40 in each compressed air line for controlling the supply of compressed air to each venturi, and a compressed air bleed line connecting each compressed air line to the others, whereby, upon opening any one of said valves to supply a major flow of compressed air to the corresponding venturi, a minor flow of compressed air is supplied to each of the other venturis thereby to apply a minor suction to their respective suction devices. Debris extracted from the patient's mouth enters the separator 26 via discharge line 86 which terminate with curved portions disposed parallel to and adjacent the inner surface of the separator, the debris swirling around the inner surface. Liquids and solids descend while air or gas rises passing through a conduit 72, 73, 74 and a filter 76 to the atmosphere. Liquids exit the separator via a discharge line 100 and any air or gas entrained in the liquid is vented to the atmosphere via a passageway 102 and the filter 76. Solids settle within the receptacle portion 92 of a cap 90 threadably mounted on the separator, the cap 90 being provided with a circumferential channel 98 to prevent during removal of the cap spillage of any liquid which has collected below the level of the discharge line 100. Removal of a suction device from its holder in the dental unit will actuate the flow control valve associated therewith.
