Abstract
1299381 Ion beam apparatus UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 17 March 1970 [29 May 1969] 27377/69 Heading H1D Apparatus for generating a beam of ions comprises a laser 17, 18 generating a plasma in a magnetic confinement system 11 having at least one loss region from which plasma escapes, and means 10 for accelerating ions from said escaping plasma. A solid particle 13 falling through the focal volume of a lens 14 operates a detector 15 to trigger a Q-spoiled laser comprising an oscillator stage 17 and an amplifying stage 18. Ions produced by ionization of the particle by the laser beam are trapped between the coils 19 of a pulsed magnetic mirror having a 4 cm. diameter exit aperture providing an emergent ion beam which is radially confined by a focusing coil 21 and enters a Van de Graaf accelerator 10 or a heavy ion linear accelerator or a cyclotron.
