1299268 Graft polymerization process TORAY INDUSTRIES Inc 1 Oct 1970 46680/70 Heading C3G An impact resistant resin is produced by emulsion graft polymerizing from 1 to 85% by weight of an ethylenically unsaturated monomer on to 99 to 15% of diene rubber particles in a latch, separating the grafted particles from the aqueous phase of the latex and bulk or suspension polymerizing a monomer phase consisting of at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer with the grafted particles dispersed therein to give a resin containing 1 to 35% by weight of diene rubber particles. The grafted particles may be separated from the aqueous phase of the latex by (a) mixing the grafted particle latex with the monomer phase used for the bulk or suspension polymerization, extracting the grafted particles into said monomer phase and removing the aqueous phase. Alternatively, the grafted particle latex is coagulated, the aqueous phase is removed and the grafted particles are dried to a water content of at least 20% by weight. The bulk polymerization may be initiated in said monomer phase before the grafted particles are dispersed therein. In the examples, the grafted particles (i) and monomer phase (ii) are as follows: (a) (i) polybutadiene grafted with styrene, acrylonitrile and, optionally, methyl methacrylate, and (ii) the said monomers; (b) (i) butadiene-styrene copolymer grafted with styrene and acrylonitrile and (ii) the said monomers; (c) (i) polybutadiene grafted with methyl methacrylate and styrene and (ii) the said monomers; (d) (i) butadienestyrene copolymer grafted with styrene and (ii) the said monomer; (e) (i) butadiene-styrene copolymer grafted with styrene and acrylonitrile and (ii) methyl methacrylate and (f) (i) butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymer or polyisoprene grafted with styrene and acrylonitrile and (ii) styrene and acrylonitrile.
