1299005 Cassette-loading machines M J ROOS (KAHLE ENG CO) 16 April 1970 18258/70 Headings G2A and G2E A machine for loading film into the type of cassette in which a supply spool and a take-up spool are mounted coaxially on either side of a central partition comprises a large supply roll 21 of the film which is fed via footage counter 30 to a spooling and loading assembly 34. Here it is wound on to an arbor, the trailing edge cut and staked to a take-up spool 12, the spool 12 and the arbor then being inserted into the cassette and the arbor drawn away. In winding the film on to the arbor (130) Figs.13-15 (not shown) the end of the film is attached thereto by the operator, who then energizes the motor. After the predetermined number of turns have been wound on to the arbor the counter 30 causes the motor to be switched off. A punching assembly 40 is now operated, which punches out a tongue 41 in the trailing (now leading) end 42 of the film on the arbor. The operator now threads end 42 into a groove 152 in the core of a plastic take-up spool 12 held in a staking tool 144, the tongue 41 being positioned with its shoulder portions 145 against guide pins 146 in the upper jaw member 143 of the staking tool, see also Fig.22. The staking tool has a finger 150 having opposite edges 153, and a guide rod 151. On operating the tool, the edges 153 of finger 150 engage the spool walls and crimp the material thereof round the film tongue, locking it into the groove 152, Fig.23 (not shown). The tool 144 and upper jaw are then opened, Fig.18, so releasing the spool. The cassette body 2 is positioned against a fixed guide (156) Fig.17 (not shown) and slipped over the film 6 wound on the arbor, the arbor itself then being drawn away. The cassette is now placed in a frame guide 160, and the film threading completed by placing it across a pressure pad 10 and threading it into the cartridge body on the opposite side of partition 5 from the film roll 6, and then partially winding the lead 42 round the spool 12 as the spool is fitted over the spool mounting shaft 161 in the cassette body 2. Finally, the cover 3 is fitted over the cassette. The word "exposed" may be printed on to the film by means mounted with the punching assembly 40 so that it becomes visible at a window 14 in the cassette at the appropriate time.
