Abstract

1299002 Drilling machines KERNFORSCHUNGSANLAGE JULICH GmbH 24 March 1970 14314/70 Heading B3C A drilling machine for drilling small holes in a number of drilling cycles operates as follows: a threaded spindle is operated by a hand wheel 10 until a nut 11 is positioned such that when drill spindle 1 is lowered so that a drill just touches a workpiece then nut 11 abuts surface 15. Thus when the machine is started an initial fast feed of the drill spindle is provided via a drive shaft 2 and a gear-wheel 8 until the nut 11 meets surface 15 when the forward movement of the spindle stops and a magnetic clutch (6), Fig. 1 (not shown), between drive shaft 2 and a driven shaft (7) is caused to slip. The nut 11 operates a switch contact 5 which starts a variable-speed motor 14 to drive shaft 9 and thus feed the spindle forward. A time relay is also activated which after a preset time stops motor 14. Also by a known circuit the magnetic clutch (6) is disengaged and a spring 16 returns the spindle to the starting position to enable swarf to be removed from the drill. This drilling cycle is repeated until the necessary depth of hole is achieved. Another time relay may be provided for the magnetic clutch which operates after the motor 14 has stopped for a time suitable for ligting the drill and removing the swarf. The spindle 9 may be changed to control the required spindle feed although motor 14 can give fine adjustment of the feed speed. Driven shaft 7 is driven through a worm gear 3 and the spindle is driven by a V-belt. To enable fine adjustment of nut 11 a ratchet 17 is provided on the driven shaft of the motor 14 or on the threaded spindle 9. The machine could be operated by hand via a hand lever (18) and hand wheel 10.
