Abstract

1298837 Packaging beverage containers A TOMKINSON 12 Nov 1970 [10 Dec 1969] 60206/69 Heading B8C In a packaging for a beverage container 11, e.g. of beer or soft drink, provision is made for drinking directly from the package by closely surrounding the container by a correspondingly shaped vessel 10 which has quick-release means 12 to allow removal from the container, and which is made of a material which is water impermeable and is sufficiently rigid to enable it, after removal, to be used as a drinking vessel. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the vessel 10 comprises a closed cylinder of transparent synthetic plastics material of thickness about 0À01 inches, a release band 13, with a pull tab 14 being provided between an upper rim of the container 11 and a corresponding portion 12 of reduced thickness in the vessel. Pulling the release band 13 to open a package produces a discardable upper disc-shaped portion and a lower cylindrical portion which can be used as a drinking vessel. The vessel 10 may have a vertical fluting (27) to hold a drinking straw (28), Fig. 6 (not shown). In a modification, Figs. 4, 5 (not shown), the vessel 10 comprises a cylindrical cover as shown in Fig. 1 but formed of equal upper and lower cup portions (20, 21) a joint around the centre of the package being sealed by an external pullstrip (22). A cover vessel (31) for a bottle comprises a bottom cylindrical cup-part 32 and a disposable upper domed part (33), Fig. 7 (not shown), connected by a pull tab (34). The upper part (33) may be dispensed with in which case the bottom part (32) may be sealed by the strip (34) to the bottle (30).
