Abstract
1298754 Measuring dimensions R L CHITTOCK and B F LAMBERT 5 March 1970 [24 March 1969] 10673/70 Heading G4H The dimension of an object overlying an optical grid having reflective markings or its position along the grid is determined by photoelectrically scanning the grid and counting the number of graduations unobscured by the object. If the object is long, one end is located at a datum and only its other end overlies a grid, alternatively a grid and photo-electric detector may be used at each end of the object. The object may be a vane of a meter and several meter vanes each with respective grids may be scanned sequentially, each vane identified by a coded grid which generates a code-signal during scanning. A television raster scanning type of camera is used as a photo-electric detector with straight line or circular scanning and a counter counting the scans per frame selects the scans which scan the grids. A further counter receives the pulses generated by the exposed portions of a grid and provides an output to an indicator, or supplies a binary coded decimal signal output to a computer.
