A fixed bar 22 supports the abutment 21, and the element 29 is screwed to an axially movable part 27 of a magnetic chuck, slidably keyed to a spindle 25 having an input drive pulley 26. The part 27 and element 29 are each separated into annular portions by a non- magnetic liner 27a, and under the action of a magnet coil unit 31 the driving element portions are attracted against springs 32 into engagement with the workpiece 4; completion of the magnetic circuit through the workpiece 4 causes a strong driving engagement force. Alternatively, Fig. 7, two transverse supports 45 are provided on a bush 44 internally of the workpiece 4, three axial locating abutments 47 on a cup 46 being supported on a fixed bar 48. A magnetic driving element 53 is resiliently borne through an elastic diaphragm 57 by a rotary member 49, a coil unit 54 being provided. Further, Fig. 6 (not shown), three axial locating abutments (35) may be arranged radially outwardly of the magnetic driving element (36) limited universal pivoting of the driving element relative to the abutments (35) being allowed, or the device may be arranged to facilitate internal grinding, Fig. 9 (not shown).
