1297981 Measuring displacement electrically COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE 27 Feb 1970 [7 March 1969] 9630/70 Addition to 1173438 Heading G1N In order to measure the position of a surface of an electrically conductive body e.g. conductive liquid level, vibration or thickness of the body, the surface closes an open ended resonant cavity so that the latter's resonant frequency is determined by the spacing of the surface from the cavity. By using a test cavity provided with a displaceable plunger as described in Fig.1, parent Specification or in Specification 1197699, which plunger is moved until the resonant frequencies of both cavities, when supplied with the same micro-wave frequency, are the same and noting the movement of a micro-meter associated with the plunger the distance of the surface from the closed end of the cavity can be ascertained. In order to measure the thickness of a sheet two measuring cavities are employed positioned adjacent opposite surfaces of the sheet and each being provided with a test cavity and micro-wave generator. By knowing the distance between the cavities and determining the distances of the two surfaces from their respective cavities the thickness of the sheet can be calculated.
